Facebook, a more layed back approach to social networking, offers a great way for people to connect with family and friends. It offers an opportunity to share photos, events and every interest imaginable for individuals to connect and communicate. It is also an amazing business promotional opportunity as all of your contacts and connections are exposed to your businesses and services. However, a down side to Facebook, is people spend hours and hours on Facebook, in my opinion, too much time taken away from face to face time with famiy and friends. Another disadvantage to Facebook is that people post whatever pictures they choose on their pages that they want. If someone posts a picture with you in it without your permission, everyone in their contact has access to that photo. Also, employers are asking to view your personal web pages and information during interviews. It is very important that one is careful not to post derogatory or offensive statements on sites that could cost them a job.
Overall, I believe that maintaining a professional personal web presence is important. I have never really used social media as much as most, mainly because my career and family schedule doesnt allow time for it. However, as a way to increase my networking and career potential, I will be using LinkedIn and Facebook to platform my skills and talents in an effort to impove my personal web presence. Having a dynamic personal web presence is very important to me, therefore, over the next several months, my goal is to improve my LinkedIn account and design my new Facebook page to creatively highlight my business services .
